I will be starting dschool at columbia next month and am seriously worried about how going to an out of state school will affect my success if I decide to go the specialty route and move back to ohio.

I know you get a lot of referrals from classmates, but would it be significantly harder for me to be successful as a specialist in my home state if I don't go to the local school (which I was accepted to... and which all the local dentists seem to have graduated from)?

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

I don't know the answer but in my opinion I really don't think it would make a bucket of beans difference...

More importantly, YOU ALREADY MADE THE DECISION OF WHERE YOU WILL BE ATTENDING DENTAL SCHOOL...My advice would be to move forward and stop creating hypotheticals in your mind of what could have occured if you had chosen a different path when there is nothing you can change at this point...you're going to an excellent dental school and your success will be dependent upon what you make of the opportunities that are presented to you and your ability to overcome, not hide from, the obstacles that will arise...

Take one step at a time - students come from many states to dental school and wind up in a state different from their home or school

If a residency/speciality are in your plans - do well in dental school and choice the best program... many of these post grads now have more places - home state, dental school state, graduate program state(many of our GPRs love Delaware and decide to stay) or even another location.

Go slowly, relax, one step at a time, do the best you can... if I can be of any help - let me know.
