Locum Rates for Psychiatrists

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
No, because this is an impossible question to answer. It all depends on region of the country, inpatient versus outpatient, patient load, hours, weekends versus weekday versus overnight versus holidays. Overtime versus not. Call versus not.

This is like asking if anyone can tell you the number of hours psychiatrists work.

I go in other specialty fourms like EM and Anestiology and I can get a general idea because they are very open about locum rates.Psych fourm is not. This thread has not been helpful if not somewhat acrimonious.

There are only so many ways to do EM and anesthesia. It's not like there's locums EM in a school. Not so for psych, as we said above. Psych can be practiced in a variety of ways, from an inpatient setting to outpatient setting to a university campus to a nursing home to a rehab facility to a prison to telepsych. They all pay their locums different (and some may not use locums). The question is, why are you visiting multiple forums asking this. Are you putting together a paper or something?

Post #3 gave you an answer. A quality answer.

For psychiatry it truly is a wide range. I've known one person who never accepted a position under $200/hr. However, the other benefits and nuances to the contracts are so varied. There are so many nuances to what affects the job description, duties, and how that impacts rates. It can be answered that simply.

I’ve seen email offers for $180-220 per hour. I’ve heard of higher rates for busier jobs. More rural usually means harder to fill and higher pay for lower workload.

The best answer is above.

If you just want some numbers to go by, I regularly see $130-$170/hr, but at any given time, $110-220/hr may be available.

Alaska 300k a year, Chicago 220k as addictions director for substance abuse, Michigan 150 an hour are the offers I got today.

Now if you have a detailed description of a job and possible contract rate, you will find the people on the psych board here will gleefully opine on the pros/cons of the contract offer and if it is or isn't a good one. That's more important than the current answer you are seeking.
