I'm debating whether or not to cancel an upcoming interview at Loma Linda. Specifically I'm interested in whether a non-Christian who likes to drink alcohol and caffeine and eat meat would be miserable for a multi-year residency at LLUMC, or if this is not a problem among residents there. From speaking with Loma Linda students, it seems the med school is very Adventist, but some of this might not be as prominent as an employee of the med center. If anyone has any insight on this, it would be much appreciated.

I am a 4th year at the school. I guarantee you that I eat more meat and drink more caffeine than you do! Seriously, though, SDAism is not nearly as widespread as people think. I really believe that people use SDA status to improve their chances of getting into the school. Sure, you have a few hardcores, but for the most part the class is surprisingly normal. People do drink alcohol, eat meat, and drink caffeine. (They even cuss and have premarital sex--yikes!), What you have heard about hospital employees is true--most of the residents and nurses are not adventist.
There are still some minor drawbacks, however. While there are no rules on diet, the cafeteria does adhere to an SDA diet. You can eat meat; you just can't get it at the hospital. (There is caffeinated coffee at every nursing station, so don't worry about that). Also, many of the attendings are very religious. So while it's okay for you to go to bars and nightclubs (if you like Hispanic chicks with blonde hair and fake tits, you'll love the local club scene), it's probably best not to discuss it with the attending. Most of the residents adhere to the "don't ask, don't tell" policy in this regard. Even this is variable, though. It really depends on the department. Anasthesia, for example, is known for its very laid back, "normal" attendings. In contrast, family medicine attendings tend to be ultra religious. I notice that you are going into radiology. I don't have much experience with the attendings in that department. I think if you really want to do radiology in California, though, I wouldn't pass up the interview offer. I believe that we are one of the lesser competitive California schools. I've heard that our accepted classes generally average around 240 Step1, and that there is not extensive inbreeding.

Appreciate the reply, man, thanks.

Does Loma Linda accept IMG's for IM Residency ?
How good is its IM residency in general ?
Can one enter Fellowship after doing Residency at Loma Linda ?

I would be much grateful to you for your reply.

Thanks

See: http://lomalindahealth.org/medical-...-health-care-professionals/residency/faq.html

Depends on what you are looking for.

Can one enter Fellowship after doing Residency at Loma Linda ?

Of course. One can pursue fellowship training from pretty much any residency program in the US. Whether you are competitive depends on YOU, your in training scores, etc. more than the program.

Ok, does anyone have any more information about how the residents, staff, nurses etc are about Seventh Day Adventism? I know the med school is a lot more serious about that given the social contract they put on the secondaries.

I am going to interview there in a couple of weeks for residency in neurosurgery. I am trying to get back close to my family in southern california, but 7 years is a long time for me to be miserable, no matter how busy I'll be. I will get a better sense of everything while I am there, but it will still be a limited exposure.

I mean if the rowdy bunch are the ones that occasionally have a beer and a cup of coffee then that isn't my cup of tea. Is the surrounding area (inland empire) and community predominantly seventh day adventist as well?

Thanks for any replies.

How much rowdy partying with beer do you plan on being able to do as a neurosurgery resident? 😕

Loma Linda residents and nurses party as hard as anyone. I hear about all sorts of scandals regarding the nurses. A friend of mine dated one of them, in fact, and she and her friends were horny as hell and DTF (you wanted an honest answer). The neurosurgery guys are well-known for their parties and have never struck me as religious. If you are a guy, there are quite a few young, HOT nurses at the hospital as well. When I was doing my intern year at an LA hospital, I mentioned that I would be doing me residency at loma linda, and the first thing I heard from most of the guys who had interviewed there was how hot the nurses are. The surrounding area sucks, but you are really close to a lot of places (OC-45 minutes, Hollywood-little over an hour, Big Bear, etc.). It's not a bad place to do residency at all. Hell, it's "winter" here now, and I'm still wearing shorts. I wouldn't cancel the interview.

Not into smoking ice nor am I planning on partying every weekend. What I am saying is, when and if I do have a weekend night off, is there anything to do? Will I be able to go out and have a few drinks with people I work with, will they be willing or am I going to come off as a heathen? Considering religion is such a central part to the medical school and some departmental websites for the medical center discuss different approach to healing (i.e., religion) I assumed that the staff, nurses, and surrounding community would be predominantly seventh day adventist.

Just looking for information to clarify. If there are as many murders in San Bern and as much meth as people say, then I think I'd be content with a happy medium between that and SDA.

Yes, you will be able to go out and have drinks. There is a city adjacent to Loma Linda called Redlands where there is a downtown with bars. Most of the people go there. Like I said, the IE is nothing special, but it's really close to a lot of things, which I personally like. I don't remember signing anything related to not drinking as a resident. (When you apply to med school there, however, you do have to agree to something like that.) Of course, I wouldn't go bragging about it, but let's face it--you probably shouldn't be doing that anywhere you go. The only departments that I can think of where religion plays an integral role are some of the primary care specialties, but I know the surgeons drink and party 😉.

So true. Neuro surg is legendary for their godless heathenism. You WANT to be at their Halloween party - 'nuff said . . .

Don't you have like only 2-3 NS residents per hospital? Even if we assume that all of them are hedonistic and promiscuous, that would still hardly be a party unless you're considering multi-nurse-fivesomes. (I know an NS guy who's so out there and religious that I wouldn't even use a profanity around him, but might call him "father" if I wasn't a heathenistic atheist ).

I don't know how many nuero-surgeons loma linda takes every year, but two or three times 6 means 12-18 total residents. But it doesn't matter. Loma Linda is a great place to train, only anti-religious bigots makes a deal about it, every one else find their lives in residency at LLU no different from every one else, anywhere else - work hard, play hard.

It is a 1-2-1 residency program, and this year they are applying to become a 2 per year. Had a good time there interviewing, and I can say that the only thing I'll be missing in the hospital is meat (I'm a carnivore). There is coffee at nurses stations, the residents and attending are all awesome and enjoy hanging out.

There isn't much in the area, but LA, OC, and San Diego are all within a 2 hour drive. All my questions were answered by the residents and it's a pretty sweet place. Like I said, the only downside is the area and all vegetarian cafeteria. Not bad.
