  1. Medical Student (Accepted)
Loma Linda
Pros:
  • Might be more comfortable with the students as I come from a religious background
  • My interviewer was welcoming and made me feel comfortable, I like the atmosphere
  • SoCal has the beach, lakes, forests, and skiing all within a couple of hours (I know, I know, I won't have time for this)
  • I've been to Loma Linda before and even have some extended family there
Cons:
  • That ungodly 90k COA (LLU doesn't have scholarships)
  • I've heard that the curriculum was outdated (at least it was a year or two ago, idk about now [COVID has made everything, everywhere weird]
  • Idk if this applies, but I don't like echo chambers, not that attending LLU would resemble that
UTMB
Pros:
  • Being OOS, COA is probably around 60k for the first year, and less after that if I can become a Texas resident or if I get scholarships
  • The different tracks look interesting
  • It's Galveston, so it's basically on the beach (granted it's no Malibu)
  • More NIH funding
Cons:
  • It's Galveston, so no mountains or snow for a gazillion miles
  • No family for a gazillion miles
  • No ties and never even been to Texas in my life

*UTMB has PBL, idk if this is good or bad as I've never experienced it.

Right now, I'm leaning towards UTMB largely because of the COA.

I know that prestige isn't important unless we're talking about one of the top 10 schools, but I still want to ask, which of these schools has higher prestige? Can anybody comment on what they would do and why?

UTMB ranks slightly higher by program directors, and with that price difference, there’s almost no way to justify LLU. However, it is important to note that (in my opinion) you will have more free time during 1st and 2nd year than you think, so the beach and mountains is awesome. However, LLU still isn’t really that close. You’ll be driving 1-2 hours plus traffic. I’d go with UTMB.

Congrats on the two offers. I second what m1redsox said. I’m an incoming student at UTMB so feel free to PM me if you want to chat
