Are there any specialties that an M.D. can go into that don't require long hours and being on call often? I think I've heard that general practitioners and psychiatrists probably enjoy the most flexibility and fewest hours, because they can own their own practice and set their own hours.

Do other specialties exist that enjoy this lifestyle flexibility in the right setting?

Emergency medicine involves set hours and no call (this is true in most ER settings at least). The downside is while the hours are regular, you might be working an 11pm-7am shift.

can't believe you haven't heard of the R.O.A.D. to success (rads, ophtho, anes, derm). i would also throw path, psych, and pm&r as well.
