Whats the longest vehicle extrication that you guys have experienced? I was at the scene of one that lasted about six hours today. Anyone had a similar experience?

My friend Ross works for Hennepin County EMS. Until late last night, they were still trying to extricate people from beneath the bridge wreckage.

Just out of curiosity, why did the vehicle extrication take six hours? I have been on trench operations and a gravel truck that turned over onto another vehicle crushing said vehicle and covering it with the truck's entire load of gravel that did not take six hours.

I responded as relief three hours into it so I really couldn't tell you what initially hindered the extrication. The Pt had rolled a triple axil dump truck onto some guard rail and had gotten entangled in both the mangled guard rail and the dashboard of the cab so they were not able to lift the truck with airbags to free the driver. It finally took a USAR team out of Newark, NJ to free the driver of the truck. As far as EMS resources on scene:

2 BLS units ( 1 for transport, 1 for FF rehab)
1 ALS unit
2 ALS supervisors
1 Physician response unit (1 EM MD from the trauma center)
1 Medevac standing by at an off site location

All the respect in the world for your friend Ross. Its gotta be hell down there.

Are we talking how long to extricate a live person or the fatally injured?

Live- three and a half hours
Dead- 13 hours approximately; three semis, two head-on then one of those was struck from behind by the third. The most damaged one was about four feet long from the back of the cab to the front of it. Three fatalities in that one, for a total of five dead total as a result of the wreck.

what a cool thing to do as a physician. i would love to get involved with a program like that someday.

sounds like a hell of a scene; i don't think i've had an extrication that lasted over 1.5/2 hours tops.
