My personal record, in my last month of child fellowship, is a 16 yo w/strong family hx of CPS who presented with florid AVH after ingestion of all kinds of crap, including probable PCP.
No beds anywhere. After six days, I had to discharge him home from the ED after he stabilized with olanazpine and time in the low-stimulation room.
Which is an appalling indictment of our inpatient treatment options for kids (in adult in SF, longest wait was 3 days, with the ER breathing.down.my.neck at every change of shift).
