Anyone have any info to share about this program? I liked it there, and don't seem to see any drawbacks other than a harder schedule than some places. Opinions anyone? Thanks!

i didn't go there myself - cancelled all the boston programs because, frankly, i am interviewed out... 😳 but the one thing that i have heard is that the program has been having a lot of financial troubles in recent years. just a heads-up... maybe you could ask some residents if that has affected their experiences?

other than that, i've heard it's a great place. is it your first choice right now?

yes, i think it is, but i have reservations, plus i have 2 more in NY to go...the financial aspect is now under control, they are now with a parent corp that has helped a lot, and are no longer facing the same closure issues as just a few years ago, ...or so i hear.

final decision is still up in the air. i am thinking it will be geographic in the end--NYC vs. not NYC....

i actually think that the residents that i met there did not seem flat, which was a big bonus in my mind, and part of the reason I really liked it. i thought they were pretty interesting, though i only met about 5 or six of them. the travel aspect is not that big a deal to me, i think that the max you really travel is a 15 minute drive.

i still think Longwood runs the tightest program in terms of organization and good thoughtful block scheduling, lectures, post-residency advising etc.....

this is such a hard decision, though decision is obviously not in our hands. any thoughts on this?

i have emailed a few of the different pd's to express my interest in their program. they have been quick to return the email and express interest as well. i know it is all probably lip service but it makes me feel as though i have some control in this whole game.

about nyc...i loved nyu and a lot of residents at the longwood program told me they were also deciding between nyu and longwood. i think you are right on target to figure out if you can live in nyc...i don't think i can.

I thought Longwood had some really excellent things to offer. The program director was an affable guy and supportive of residents, per their report. The residents we met over dinner the evening prior to interviews all seemed like nice, level-headed folks. They had good things to say about their program, and it seemed that the 4th years were all going to their first choice fellowships. Some were heading off to good jobs as well. At lunch the next day the group was a bit more reserved... maybe they were tired.

It does seem like there is some traveling involved since Mass Mental is closed, but that isn't at all unique to Boston programs. In fact, that goes for many programs in the Northeast -- Yale, Penn, Mt Sinai, NYU, Cornell all are spread out between two facilities, at least. True, you don't need a car for NYC though.

Word is that the Longwood program is the most balanced of Boston's major three programs, in terms of research exposure and psychotherapy didactics.

That's all I know. 🙂
