Hi SDN!
Looking for some advice on how to proceed with the application process at this point. I am a senior biology major applying for the first time this current cycle. I applied to about 20 schools (see list below) with a list almost solely based on MSAR's GPA and MCAT statistics (I realized now that this was not the right way to do it). I received two interviews (University of Maryland and Penn State), one pre-II hold (Drexel), and mostly rejections. I am currently on the waitlist at UMD and will not hear back from PSU until early May. Secondaries were complete mid-September.
GPA: 3.74
MCAT: 507 (127/124/128/128)
MD Resident, White Male
EC’s:
- Volunteer at a free health clinic for underserved inner city communities (160 hours)
- Clinical research assistant in summers (350 hours)
- With poster but no publication
- Section leader in marching band (450 hours)
- EMT for school’s ambulance service (1900 hours)
- EMT supervisor for philanthropic dance marathon (75 hours)
- Teaching assistant for EMT course (200 hours)
- English as a second language tutor (75 hours)
- Recruitment chair for honors fraternity (300 hours)
- Shadowing in orthopedics (100 hours)
- Shadowing in neurology (50 hours)
Schools I applied to:
- University of Maryland – Interview in January
- Penn State University – Interview in March
- Drexel
- Rowan (MD)
- VCU
- Jefferson
- Michigan State
- Central Michigan
- West Virginia University
- Wayne State
- University of Kansas
- University of Oklahoma
- University of Vermont
- Rosalind Franklin
- LSU
- UAB
- Loyola Stritch
- University of Louisville
- University of Toledo
Looking for opinions on what to do from here. I can re-apply EARLY with a more well thought out school list. I can take some time off and retake the MCAT (not my preference). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
