I'm an undergraduate looking to apply to PhD programs in the fall of 2012. I need some ideas for what I can do to be productive over the summer. Ideally I'd like to continue doing research and/or find a job where I could obtain clinical experience but I'm open to volunteering as well. I'm also starting to look at some GRE books.

Has anyone ever worked as a research assistant with a professor not from their college over the summer?

Any ideas for gaining research / clinical experience would be greatly appreciated. Also any tips for studying for in advanced for the GREs

Thanks

I worked with a professor not from my college last summer and it was a wonderful experience. I highly recommend doing this!

Honestly, it might be too late to find a good summer position for this summer. But if you start looking early for next summer (like February) you should be able to find something exactly what you're looking for that might even be paid.

For this summer, your best bet is to shoot a bunch of emails off and ask for volunteer jobs for research or clinical work. Again, its a little late but you might get lucky.

Yes, my college professors don't want undergrads involved in their research, i have been forced to seek opportunities outside, and have found them.

While it's much harder, there are also more opportunities. Don't be shy, remember the worst answer you can get is "no" and don't give up!

you could always hook up with your local psych association organization, blast their listserv or better go to an event and network through there to find opportunities, I don't think it is too late for you as long as you know how to hustle, which only means talk to everyone, be nice, and ask for what you want...
