Hi everyone,

I am an undergraduate junior and I have looking to shadow a DO in chicago. If anyone knows a DO that is willing to let students shadow or if any DOs on this platform is open to having students shadow them I would be deeply thankful!

Call clinics with DOs there and ask. It really isn’t a complete requirement because there is literally zero difference in the way DOs practice (unless they do OMM)

I would recommend going to doctorsthatdo.org and you can find DO’s in your area and just cold call and ask. Also you could contact you state osteopathic medical association. When I contacted mine, they gave me a list of DO’s that are willing to have students shadow them.

Don't fret if you can't find a DO to shadow; not at all a requirement. I've had literally 0 experience with shadowing/working alongside DO's and received II's to 9/11 DO schools I applied to, and accepted to my top choices of those. Just know how you can tie your previous experiences with the DO "philosophy." PM me if you have any questions.

I am going to be applying broadly next year. Some schools mention a DO LOR is highly looked at. ARCOM specifically states a DO recommendation is required. and congrats! Most schools do not impose such demands thankfully. My stats are 3.24 ugcGPA, 3.4sGPA, 505 MCAT. A decent amount of ECs. @enchantments would you say that could still land me an acceptance with DO? ( Last 55 hours upper-division classes with straight A's)

I was in your boat too, this post helped me figure out not just how to ask doctors to shadow but also how to FIND doctors to shadow. hope it helps!

If you're applying to schools where a letter is a strict requirement, then I guess there's not much of a choice in that regard, and you should just cold call as others have suggested. Your stats are on the lower end for most DO schools, but I think if you apply broadly enough you should be able to snag a few interviews and hopefully some acceptances. And the upper trend should help. I did have relatively higher stats (LM ~68) which I'm sure played a large part in me getting a lot of interviews.

If you want to really boost your chances though, you might consider retaking the MCAT. I'm of the firm belief that any student can surpass 510+ with enough effort and practice tests. If you raised your score to that level it should improve your chances by a significant margin.

I will be retaking my MCAT and also attending the PCOM SMP next year to boost my resume. I am aiming for 510+! Thank you again!
