Hello everyone,

I'm a 3rd year DO student who is looking to do anesthesiology and was hoping I could get some suggestions of some mid-tier programs in the Illinois/Michigan/Ohio/New York area. My USMLE is 200 and I figure my best shot is to set up rotations at "less-so" competitive programs next year (of coarse study my butt off for step 2). I mean Chicago alone has got 8 or so programs but I have no idea which are the more prestigous. I would rather spend two weeks impressing at a mid-tier program than compete with a bunch of MD's with 230+ scores.

Thanks for the advice!!!And good luck to all those in the 2011 match!

St. Barnabas in NJ, SUNY downstate in Brooklyn, maybe Montefiore in Bx. 200/DO = apply broadly and include some low tier programs.

One tip for away rotations, showing alot of initiative can go along way.
I have a friend who did a fourth year rotation at a top program (he was a below average student). He volunteered to do morning rounds several times and he even gave a brief presentation at grand rounds and is now a resident there.

I thought students who are on a SICU month always participated in AM rounds. I even participated on weekend rounds at one program.
No, I didnt do a brief presentation @ ground rounds, however, there were no true "ground rounds" where I rotated, and the lectures were attending ran. I did receive an LOR at both places I auditioned... apparently I impressed the ICU director at one program, don't know how the other LOR is at the other program. I'd be happy to be selected at my top 2, or any.

I'm a DO student and I recieved interview offers NE programs UConn, monte, st. lukes, barnabus, UMass, SUNY upstate, buffalo, and albany. If I were you I'd definitely take USMLE step 2 early and plan on scoring >235, preferably >240. Buy a subscription of UWorld and get crackin, have that thing memorized. Also consider the DIT program, it's pretty good. It's definitely doable, you just need to go all out starting today. I wouldn't take step 2 any later than mid july because you will want to have your score back in time so you can decide how competitive you are and which programs to apply to. Also, you don't want to have to study for boards while you are working long hours on audition rotations. :xf:👍

NYMC Westchester does, St Joes is like 45 mins from city and very DO friendly, UMDNJ Newark I heard isnt for gas.
I agree with the rest stated above
