I have been shadowing my dentist for awhile, but I don't think he is the type of person who would write good LoR. So, I having another person in mind but he is not a dentist. Is it necessary to get a LoR from dentist? Will I be disadvantged if I don't have a LoR from dentist?

For MOST schools (if not all), a letter from a dentist is REQUIRED. Therefore, you absolutely need a dentist's letter. I think the primary purpose of a dentist's letter is to prove that you have been shadowing and working in a dental office (to make sure you know what dentistry is about). Of course, the evaluation from the dentist can focus on your personality, your interactions with the staffs, etc....So, if you can get a decent letter from the dentist you are currently shadowing, you should be ok. That is just my opinion. In short, you must obtain a letter from a dentist for most schools. If you can find another dentist to work for and get a better letter, then go for it.

Depending on the school you apply to, each will be different whether they require a LOR from a dentist....and YES in my opinion I would look more upon a candidate which has a LOR from a dentist.
