LOR from a N.D.

Hey all, have any of you ever sent in a lor from a Naturallopathic Doctor? What, if anything, did adcoms say about it? I'm thinking that adcoms might say "hey this kid has seen more than one type of physician, explored other practices of medicine and is still interested in being an allopathic doc, good sign". But maybe I am all wrong...at any rate, please let me know what you all think. Thanks.

If you worked for this N.D. and they gave you a recommendation on your work performance, reliability, compassion, etc., then it makes sense. A letter from a supervisor N.D. is as good as one from any other supervisor.

But, if it is just an N.D. that you shadowed for a few days or some acquaintance of yours, I think it would be a poor choice of a letter of recommendation.

I agree with mpp. If the N.P. really knows you and can write a strong letter, then go with it. If you just shadowed him/her for a few days, then forget it.

And I'm not just talking out of my butt--last year I spoke to an adcomm member who actually used shadowing as an example of a "poor leter."

But if you actually worked with the N.P., then it's all good...

Important distinction...the OP was NOT talking about a nurse practicioner. He/she was talking about a naturopathic doctor and that's why the question came up. ND's are not exactly universally recognized as health care professionals, but if the person knows you REALLY well, then sure, go for it, particularly if you are applying to a school in a state that does allow them to do something.

Thanks for the responses- I actually do work side by side with this physician, have done so for some time, and will hopefully continue to do so. I think she could write me a great letter, but I just didn't want to invite any biases that adcoms may have to their counter-parts. Have a great friday night all 😀
