I took a class last year (freshman spring) with a prof, and my PI mentioned two or three times that this professor told him I was the best student/one of the best students in his class. So I would really like to get a LOR from this professor but I have a few concerns.

1. I haven't visited this professor since freshman year. I see him around the department once in a while, and sometimes I get a nod or hello from him. This could just be his being polite (he is an old guy, after all).

2. During my time as his student, we never talked about ME. Is that important in getting to know me, or is his belief I'm a good student good enough?

3. By the time I apply to med school, it would have been two years since I'd taken his one-semester class. Should I talk to this professor now (it would be about a year)? Or should I wait until when I apply?

What should I do? Any advice?
Thanks!

While it is most ideal to get the LOR right after getting the final grade, it is better to ask him now than to wait any longer. Chances are he still remembers your name and how well you did in his class. Even though you never talked to him specifically about you, sending him a resume and transcript should be sufficient enough for him to add a couple details on other activities you have going.
