LOR from online class

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I actually thought of doing this, for the same reason as you, to fulfill a "non science" LOR (I hadn't taken a non science class in many many years aside from online classes). Ultimately, I was able to find another prof. But yeah, seems kinda sketchy to do this.

I think it would be fine, I mean would the professor really say in the LOR "YO BTW THIS WAS AN ONLINE CLASS"

All my letters have said something along the lines of "xyphr was a student in my xxxxxx class for the fall 2012 term"

I understand that the general consensus, according to previous forums, of receiving a LOR from an online instructor is a bad idea. But would it be okay to get a LOR from my bioethics professor from an online summer course. The class requires me to submit over 30 separate page long assignments that I get direct feedback from, and is a heavily discussion based course. I love the class and the professor has enjoyed everything that I have so far submitted.

Would it be okay to ask for my non-science LOR?
If so, how should I go about asking? (I was thinking about an email regarding meeting in person).

Thanks

Your productivity in a class is denoted by the grade on your transcript. If all they are going to say is, "John was a good student in my class." This is a very weak letter. Your letters should be coming from people that can attest to things outside of academic achievement as well.

I've seen LORs that said exactly that in content and nothing else. It doesn't make you look good if you pick such poor LOR writers.

One would always ask potential writers "Do you know me well enough to write me a good LOR for my med school app?"

I said that to my orgo 2 professor through email and she replied yes. However, I only visited her office hours 3 times during the semester and asked a couple of questions after class. She could recognize me if she saw me but probably wouldn't be able to go beyond my in class work ethic. I'm not too sure how strong the letter will be but I might just keep it aside as a backup.
