I have been shadowing a physician all summer and will be finishing up my time with her next week. I want to ask her to write a letter of recommendation for me. What information do I need to give to her in order to get the best letter possible? Should I ask her to focus on something specific in the letter? Any additional advice for requesting other letters would be appreciated! Thanks

Give her a resume or a CV so she can address certain things you've done. Include things like work experience, research, honors, education, skills, etc.

I gave all my letter writers a copy of my resume, my AMCAS statement, and my transcript. Being a physician himself/herself (sorry I forgot what the original post said), s/he should have a pretty good idea of what should be in a letter. Since your professors will be commenting on your work/academics, ask if s/he could focus on your character/maturity/clinical aspect more.

Ask the physician if they will write you a letter at all (i.e. do they feel like they know you well enough to do a good job). They will tell you what information they need.

Overall, a letter from someone who knows you very well is worth much more than a letter from someone prestigious because the admissions committees are very good at seeing through BS letters and it will backfire against you.
