Hi everyone I need some advice: I have a question about the LoR process,

I am taking a humanities class right now that I really like and I participate a lot in. The professor knows me personally by name in a lecture of 50-60 students (not huge but not small) and I think I really get along w/her. I will most likely get an A in this class b/c it's (1) easy and (2) I find it really interesting.

I am applying for the 2013-2014 cycle, and I am retaking the MCAT. I'm not sure if I'm ready by the 23rd but if I don't feel ready by middle of next week, then most likely i will take in June 20th.

I wanted to know, should I get her as a 4rth letter of rec? I think I have a good relation with her and she's one of the professors I talk to the most. And if so, how do I ask her given that I won't know my grade till end of the semester (end of may? early June?)

Also, I have notified my other non-science professor and one of my science professors if they can write my LoR and they have agreed.

The last science professor I haven't yet asked b/c I've been too focused on the MCAT and I lost track of time. I know I need to ask him ASAP, but is it considered "late" to ask yet? He's the chairman of the Bio Dept, so I admit I am a bit intimidated by him, but I also work for him this semester, although we haven't had much face-to-face contact in the last 2 months.

Thank you!

Yes, you can ask your professor for this semester even without knowing your final grade. I asked a couple from the last semester before I applied (I already knew most of my grades by late April, had pretty good relations with them, and they assured me that they'll be able to write strong letters). The most important thing is you feel like they know you. Ask them if they can write you a "strong letter" (literally); most professors will be honest about it. As long as not all of your letters are from professors who only taught you for one semester, you'll be fine.

To answer your second question, no it's not too late. Personally, I think 1 month advance notice is more than enough. This means that if you want them to get their recs in by early June, you just need to ask by May. The only potential problem is if the professor says no; then you may have trouble securing another one in time.

Get anybody you possibly can. You can have 10 letters and then pick and choose which letters you want to send to different schools based on their different requirements.
