Hi,

I am planning on receiving a letter of rec from my vol coordinator/manager and was wondering what the best way to ask would be? Email or call etc? And do you think it is a good idea to get a letter from vol manager of a hospice? thanks a lot!

My advisor says you should get 4-6 letters. Three should be from professors, with at least two science letters. The other 1-3 letters should be from important extra-curriculars like research, shadowing, volunteering, etc.

If your volunteer manager can write you a strong letter you should get it. Email, call, stop by for a visit -- doesn't really matter. I initially approached all my letter writers in person.

Strongly recommended. When you ask your letter writer "Would you be willing to write me a strong letter of reference?" its best to be there in person.

If they squirm, hesitate and say, "Uh... sure...", you know to look elsewhere. In email, you can't tell anything.

Besides, its courtesy.

thanks for the help! I had one more question if and will appreciate any help. I have been shadowing a family practice attending who is in charge of the residents. I have not talked to this person too much since he has always been busy with patients and residents when I was shadowing him. But, he is a really nice doc and allows me to shadow whenever I ask. So do you think I can ask him for a strong LOR? I know he does not know me that well, but I as thinking I telling him that I would provide him with my ps, cv etc to write about? Please help thanks a bunch!!

YEs...go in person...even offer the coordinator that you can write one yourself and he/she can modify it and sign...

Dude, if you asked me for a letter of rec and offered to write it for me, especially if I didn't know you well, I would think you were, mmm, at best, not the most ethical person on earth. If you don't trust me to take the time to write a decent letter on my own, you shouldn't ask me.

I do think it's a good idea to give a copy of your PS, maybe a CV with the form in hardcopy, along w/ instructions for how to submit it electronically, if that's a choice. Our premed advisor has a sheet of instructions for how to write the letter we can give the writer, explaining the sort of info the commitee/medical schools are looking for. If you don't have that, you might look on AMCAS or SDN for a template of one.

i have been searching for a template for LOR but have not found anything. can someone help me out? thanks!!
