So I've already spoken to a professor about writing a LoR and she told me to come into her office to talk about future plans, etc. before she actually writes it. I won't need it for a while (6 months) so should I just make an appointment with her now or should I do it 1-2 months before the deadline? Or, should I wait until ABP start their application process and then talk to her? (I don't want her to write it and have no where to send it to. Also, I don't want to break the sealed LoR rule by keeping it with me until its time to send it out).

Follow the rules and wait until they start accepting the letters. Letters are often dated anyway and if its dated now and sent in later, you could get into trouble.

I'd actually get it now as referees have a bad habit of disappearing. As long as the LoR is within a year I don’t think it would be considered stale dated. Maybe call the ABP office and see if they have any advice?

I waited to ask for my recs and ended up in a tough situation where one of my referees didn’t get the letter together until way past the deadline. Though it was fine in the end, the delay caused me a lot of avoidable stress.

Thanks for the advice. Looks like my best bet is to wait until August and hope she doesn't disappear before the November deadline.

The reference letters are the worst part of the application process! It would be so easy if we could get them when we can (like right after you complete your volunteer work or finish a class) and keep them in storage until we can use them...unfortunately it never works out that way because the letters have to come directly from the referees and theres only a specific time period the schools accept them. A lot of Canadian schools require electronic references which are open for only a limited period of time, and the schools that accept the paper format only accept those letters in a restricted time period so if you sent them now it would be soon and they may not know to do with it so they'll probably discard it.
