I recently received my first letter of recommendation from an oral surgeon whom I shadowed a little while back. Firstly, I was shocked at the brevity. How long are dental school LORs generally? Also, most of my classes are huge, and none of my professors know who I am. I know this will make it hard for me to get solid recommendations, but what precisely should I consider in choosing which LORs I will actually use for my application? Any and all advice is appreciated.

Simple word of advice: visit your teachers during office hours. Ask good questions, show your interest in the material, and then shoot the breeze about your dentistry aspirations and how hard you've been working to reach your goal. It also helps to sit near the front of the classroom.

As for the oral surgeon, I would ask him to re-write it, or if you can write your own version and have him edit it into his own words or just sign it. Most dentists prefer the latter route.

If all lors need to meet standards generally applied to Nobel Prize Nominee, there isn't much point in having them.
