Do any of you have any suggestions for LORs in a foreign language?

Background: I am planning on reapplying and evaluating my application now. I founded a nonprofit a couple years back and we have distributed over 7000 pairs of glasses in Cambodia. We work directly with a high-ranked government magistrate/official.

I have been considering asking him for a LOR because he can speak to much of my service experience. The letter would thus be written in Cambodian. I could translate it, but that would defeat the purpose. Any thoughts/suggestions?

He needs to write it, have someone translate it, have someone else proofread it, then submit it. You can't see it. And it can't be submitted in Cambodian.

^ seems like a lot of unnecessary work for a high-ranked gov't official. Hopefully you're that important 😉

But yes, agree with ommnomm.

That's what secretaries and aides are for.

"It doesn't matter whether you have a letter from a US Senator or the dean of a medical school. What matters is the content of the letter."

Right, @Goro ?

And I wonder what percentage of LORs from "famous" people are actually written by them. Maybe 10%?

Thank you for the advice. I think that the letter would speak to my character well so it would be worth pursuing, but definitely a lot of work.

Sounds like a really cool letter. But yeah, it has to be translated into English. You should talk to him about it, I'm sure he has some translators who could do it (you cannot read/translate it). Worst case scenario, he says it's too much work and it doesn't happen, but you may as well ask.

Although, it would be hilarious if you submitted a LOR in Cambodian.

I know its been a while since I posted but I had some more questions- so should I have the magistrate email it to my translator and then have the translator submit it? Should it be submitted with the original in Cambodian? Does it need to be a professional translator or some of the people I know who speak the language too?

My Admissions Dean would throw it away. Have a neutral party provide a translation, unless you're applying to medical school in Cambodia.
