Hey all,

There's an EM related Tox rotation that I want to set up, but because of scheduling issues, I can only set it up in october. the head of the tox program is the director of the EM program I want to go to and it would be really helpful if I got a letter from him. If i were to take this rotation in October, and request a letter from him at/near the end of the rotation, will it be too late?

Setting up the rotation in time to be considered for UIC's interview list would be helpful. That way Dr. Erickson will have time to evaluate your performance for his program. However, you should still have two SLORs that speak to your abilities in the ED. I am not sure if he (Dr. Erickson) will give you a SLOR from the Toxiciology rotation, but I wouldn't count on it for application purposes as a letter coming in late October / early November won't help you in getting prompt consideration from other programs.

In short, I would try to arrange to have two SLORs before applications are due (or shortly after), and use the Tox rotation to shine and strengthen your application at UIC. But that is just my opinion, your milage may vary.

October isn't too late. Most applicants haven't finally completed their ERAS by that point. I would, however, a few weeks into the rotation ask for a LOR so you aren't putzing around in mid November trying to get that LOR finished.

I did an EM rotation in Nov and did not use a LOR from that rotation, even though they told me I did a great job. I did have oen of the attendings write a note to leave in my application at that program but I figgered Nov was too late to get another LOR in... already had four at the time.

agreed. a tox rotation is not gonna get you into a program, but should only be viewed as making you a stronger candidate. if u really wanna go to uic, u should think about rotating through.

I'm already setting up a rotation with the program for this summer. I know a tox rotation won't get me in, but if it will truly make my app stronger for that program then that'll be great.

One of my LORs came from an away rotation in October, so it was no problem. As Quinn said, make sure they know before you leave the rotation that you are hoping they will write you a letter. Even though it is in October, expect that the program may wish to interview you while you are still there, especially if it is distant from your home school.

Gi Joe,
I don't think Oct. is too late. I did the same thing last year, and got a letter finally uploaded to ERAs by about Nov 10. I would ask the doc early, and try to get him/her to move on it, because by the time they dictate it, the secretary types it, and it gets uploaded to ERAs (things got delayed there this past fall) it could cost you a few weeks. Also, a few programs might not review your app until they have everything downloaded. I think if there is any delay a cordial phone call to the secretaries at the programs you are really interested in couldn't hurt (say it's a week after Dean's letters have come out Nov 1st)....
anyway, that's my two cents.
Erickson seems like a really great guy and I have to say the program seemed pretty sweet at the interview....
