Hello fure gas docs,

My ERAS is about all set to go. Seems I'm applying to a lot of 2-4 programs that require you to find pgy-1 year elsewhere. So I'll bel looking at prelim med spots and transitional years. However I would like to stay in the same place for 4 years. Short of applying to prelim programs in every city you apply for in gas, is there anything else to do? Has anyone applied to gas, seen where they got interviews and then applied for prelim programs? Seems a little risky.

Also, do you send the same LOR's to the prelim/trans programs that you send to gas programs? Most of my LOR's are gas specific. Does it make a difference or should I send a weaker but general med letter to pgy1 programs?

Thanks in advance

Most of my personal statements to my PGY-1 year programs were gas specific. It's not a big deal to have a PGY-1 specific essay -- as I was told a few times by PDs, you're essentially screened by your USMLE scores for those interviews (the cushier places require higher scores, obviously).

Obviously you should apply to both your anesthesia PGY-2 and internship PGY-1 programs at the same time. You're essentially competing for a fixed number of interview spots (for both) which will fill up first-come-first-served.

More importantly, you really don't want to be in a situation in which your best chances for anesthesia are PGY-2 only programs and you didn't bother to apply to PGY-1 programs because you were either a) too cheap to send out your ERAS info or b) willing spend the bucks and the time for a plane ticket and a hotel room.

Scrambling for a transitional year spot sucks and you really don't want to do a prelim surgery year.

Sevo,

Thanks for your reply. For my personal statement for pgy-1 programs I am using my gas statement plus the Dr. Cuts theory - throw on a couple of BS lines or maybe a short paragraph about how trans./prelim. will prepare you for gas.

Most of my personal statements to my PGY-1 year programs were gas specific.

Do you mean LOR'S?

My application is set up and ready to go soon as I can get this figured out. I think I am just gonna send gas letters to the prelim/trans programs. Even one of my letters (that is coming in any day hopefully now) from an EM attending is probably gas specific - the letter writer knows I am going for gas.

TIA
