I've been working as a research tech for over a year now at my institute, and my PI has voiced his full support for writing me a rec letter. The thing is though my supervisor, with whom I've worked with very closely, is a PhD Candidate (she actually defended yesterday and is now a post-doc). Its only been the past 2 months or so that I've actually interacted with my PI about my projects.

My supervisor, however, is my PI's right-hand person so they talk and interact constantly so he knows everything I've done since I've been here and how I work and so on. So here's my question:

Is it better to have my PI and supervisor write the letter together and she co-signs it (my PI said this would make the letter stronger), or should I get a letter from each?

Co-sign. The PhD candidate's letter would be of minimal value alone. The letter's credibility is largely derived from the PI's name. It is the same as a letter from a TA (i.e., the prof needs to write/sign the letter) or from a charge nurse (w/ whom you actually worked and received direct supervision) and the clinical manager (who was actually your official supervisor/manager and whose word would carry more weight).
