Hi all -

I have a question about LORs (sorry if something similar has been asked before). Basically I finished residency a year and a half ago, am planning to apply to heme/onc this coming summer. In the interim I've been working a hospitalist at a community hospital My question, is it acceptable to get an LOR from an oncologist in private practice or is that looked down upon. I didn't start thinking about heme/onc as a career until the very end of residency so I didn't make a lot of contacts before residency ended. I've tried to get in contact with multiple people from my program in the onc department since then, but unfortunately the university has very strict policies that would make it very difficult for me to work/do any research at that institution as I'm no longer affiliated with it. I can get other letters from gen med attendings at my university that that know me pretty well as well an endocrine attending that I did research with (at the time I was interested in endo, but the research was in thyroid cancer).

I'm not trying to get into a big name program, just a good academic program where I can get some good research exposure and clinical training.

Thanks for all your input.

1) "is it acceptable to get an LOR from an oncologist in private practice or is that looked down upon." --> some thing is better than nothing.

2) I can get other letters from gen med attendings at my university that that know me pretty well as well an endocrine attending that I did research with (at the time I was interested in endo, but the research was in thyroid cancer) ---> Thyroid cancer is also cancer especially if you don't have other stuff. Letter from PD looks great.
