I was wondering how long is a LOR from a teacher good for, I have about 2 years before applying. Also does sociology count as a non-sci.?Thanks

Hola Gutierrez,

Buena suerte!

ask the proff if he/she would be able to right you a strong letter. if s/he says yes then say that you will be applying in 2 yrs. your proff may want to write the letter now but it would be better if you guys just kept in touch and he/she wrote the letter during the year that you will apply.

also anything not bcpm (bio chem physics math) is non sci, but dont ever tell a soc sci proff that you need a "non sci" letter from him/her.

soc would definitely be a nonscience. my advice would be to just stay in contact with the prof over the next couple years and then ask for the letter.

you might also want to ask someone at your career center (if you have a reference letter service or something like this, go there) how long letters are good for at your school just in case you have to get the letter soon.

The thing is that i am in a community college and I will be done this term and i will be starting UF in jan. , so I would rather get a LOR from a teacher here becuz class are much much smaller and teacher get to know you better , instead of a class that has 200 students were teacher have no clue who you are. This is why i dont know what to do......thanks

Gutierrez, best thing to do would be to wait until matriculating at UF in January, then establish a letter of recommendation file with the Office of Health and Legal Professions Advising (OHLPA). The office is located on the second floor of the advising building at UF. Go ahead and let the professor at your CC know that you would like him to write you a LOR, but that you will not need it until next semester, just in case he/she wants to go ahead and get started on something for you while you are still fresh in his/her mind.

A lot of the schools I've applied to mandate that LOR's aren't to be older than 1 year. So, maybe you could tell her this and ask her to maybe write it now and date it later

Do the LOR have to have a DATE on it?

I've written a few LORs and I've always dated them. That's not to say everyone does, but even if they don't they should provide context as to how they know you (time frame, class, etc) and it wouldn't be too hard for the ADCOMS to figure out when the letter was written especially if they didn't touch on any of your activities, experiences, successes after the date listed on AMCAS for when you took their class.

man, i have the same prob, my volunteer co-ordinator at a hosp wrote me a LOR last year for something else....and i kinda want to send it in for a non-sci touch to my file...im sure she dated it...would it look that bad???

It's better than nothing if that's all you have. Have you seen this letter, though? What if she geared it toward "something else" and not medical school admissions. That might be a problem. Maybe ask her to update it ...???
