I did about a year of research total, started out volunteering and then was hired to continue the project. My problem(?) is this...the professor/doctor in charge of the lab/project was out of the country on sabbatical for a large portion of the year that I was there (and the entire time I was actually getting paid; although he wanted to/approved of my hiring). My question is this...who should I get my LOR from? The dr. who knows me but didn't see much of my effort first hand or the lab manager who was around me the entire time and knows what I really put into it?

get it from the person who knows you better. they can comment better on your proficiencies, work ethic, personality, etc. better than the dr. who only knows a name. if anything, you can have that dr. sign off on it or something, or write it with input from the lab manager. just talk to them about it.

i talked with the lab manager today and she said that the best thing to do would be to write my own LOR and then have him revise/sign it...has anyone ever done this? new to me...

i've heard of this and known some people who got to do this.

just write the letter and have him/her revise/sign it.
