Hey I had a question about LOR's ... I emailed an old professor and he said he would be fine with writing me a letter but then asked me
"who it's going to (with their address), and if they have a form to fill out or just a letter from me, and the deadline."

Obviously it's for dental schools but who is it going to exactly? I don't plan on applying till next year but thought I should get on the ball and get the LOR's ready from now. How exactly does one get an LOR ? I always thought I would come by and just pick up an envelope with their letter and then fax it over whenever I apply. And deadline for what? Is he simply asking for the deadline just to have enough time to write the letter?

I posted this in another thread but figured this would be seen more.
Thank you!

The letter can be mailed, or the professor can upload it electronically. If your professor plans on mailing it, then he MUST attach a LOR matching sheet to it, which can only be found once the cycle opens in June. He only needs to mail it once to AADSAS, and the address to mail it can be found on the matching sheet. As for deadline, there is none. He can mail it anytime he wants. If your application gets sent out to dental schools without it, then AADSAS will just send the LOR at a separate date. Obviously, schools will not look at your app until it's complete and has all the required LOR's on file.

So I can't like take his letter of recommendation and save it anywhere or have a hard copy of it? Since I don't plan on applying this cycle I mean. This doesn't make sense, wouldn't it make more sense if you could get a letter of recommendation as you go throughout your undergrad years instead of having to hunt for your old professor and worry about them remembering you?

Yeah it's best for him to write you a LOR now than later so he will still remember you. What I would do is ask him to complete it now, and save it on his hard drive. After a year, you can ask him to upload the letter to AADSAS or mail it. Just make sure he gets it done and he doesn't procrastinate.
You aren't supposed to have a copy of any LOR. The letters are sent or uploaded by the evaluators themselves.

Does your school write prehealth committee letters? If so, your school might have a process where all letters of recommendation be sent directly to them (pre-health committee). Then the pre-health committee will compile all the collected letters and create a committee letter, which is sent to AADSAS (dental school application processing)
