Hello SDNers!

I have a question about the LOR requirement for MD schools. I know it is 2 science and 1 non, but for one of the science letters, do you need to have had that professor in class? Like could you get a PI to write one science letter, even though you did not have him or her as a professor in a classroom setting?

I hope my question makes sense. 🙂

Actually, generally if a school is specific enough about their letters of rec to ask for two sciences, they also specify that the science letters need to come from someone who has taught you in the sciences. A good number of schools go as far as to define these as classes that were classified by AMCAS as BCPM. Don't take the risk, find yourself a second science letter, even if it's not the greatest, and include it only where it's absolutely required. You should get the PI letter to supplement.
