[Rant]

Why oh why oh way does PSU have to be so difficult.

Four LORs:

1. At least two letters from faculty in science disciplines.
2. At least one letter from faculty in a non-science discipline.
3. At least one remaining letter from college faculty, community leader, employer, or others in positions of responsibility that know the applicant well.

No additional letters are required, UNLESS:
1. You have multiple degrees. If this is true, you must submit one letter from each of the institutions that has granted you any of the following degrees:

Associate
Bachelor
Master
Doctorate

2. You have one year or more of graduate study or full time employment. If this is true, you are required to submit one additional letter of recommendation from a member of the graduate faculty or work supervisor.

 That's SIX LORs! But wait! What if you haven't been in undergrad for over four years?? And your LOR writer died (true!)? Their answer: send a letter that says "that you were a student in good standing and that you earned a degree from that institution."

WTF? Isn't the fact that my degree and honors are recorded on my transcript enough!? Or did that fact escape them? Useless beauracratic BS, that's what this is. 🙄

Will they be happy with my four outstanding LORs from faculty who've known me the past four years? Will it be enough????? 😕

This is why sometimes being a non-trad applicant blows. 👎

Ridiculous!

Thank you for your time.

I'm in the same boat as you. MCW has some *crazy* LOR requirements.

I sent them an email explaining that I've been out of school for 4 years. They replied that they would only accept substitutions for ugrad LORs if you've been out of school for 6 or more years.

FIrst of all, I didn't do that great in undergrad (solid B student), hence getting a Master's degree. I honestly think that a letter from my employer and current profs and thesis advisor would be more compelling that a letter from a prof from a class I got a B in 4 years ago.

I guess I'll just have to save my self $60. It's a good thing that there are other schools without such stringent requirements for LOR from ugrad.

Grrrrrrrrr

Wow, if I needed that many letters for a school, I think I would just mark that school of the list and pick another.

I'd like to rant about just now finding out about the Wake Forest non-science LOR. Coming from a large undergrad school, most of my classes were only taught by TA's with no professor associated with the class. My pre-med advisor looked over my transcript and agreed I was basically out of luck getting that LOR. Guess it's one secondary I don't have to worry about.

:meanie: I think they're off my list. Pity....

Haha... I'm with you on the Penn State thing. I missed the deadline for my school's comm. letter (didn't think I was applying US this year), and so, I either need a ton of letters in stead for PSU or need to write a letter stating why I didn't get the committee letter. What a crock... but they are my state school.....

My response to all of this last year was just to send out a set of letters (two science, one humanities, one work) to all the schools, regardless of how absurd their requirements were. I didn't have a problem anywhere. I'm sure if I had called and asked, I would have gotten the party line. The moral of the story is -- it's better to beg for forgiveness than ask for permission.

Good idea. I'll send them what I've got. If they don't like it.....
