Hi everyone,

I always see people talking about how some schools require LORS from 2 science profs and one non-science prof. My question is, where do you find information about LOR requirements for specific schools? I don't see it in the MSAR and I can't find anything about it on most schools' websites. As of right now, I have a letter from a science prof, a non-science prof, and a prof for whom I did/am doing research (but didn't have in class). Hence, I suppose I need to find out about the specific requirements of schools that I am applying to lest I not be qualified to apply...

Thanks

maybe a letter from your coroner will count as a science lor?

the obvious answer is to call schools. but, if you find that at least one school you are applying to requires 2 science lors, then you will need to do that despite what other schools require. what you really need to look out for is if your second research letter counts even though you never took a class. this is your main limiting factor. if a school doesn't go out of there way to state a lor policy on their website, then i wouldn't worry too much about it.

edit: but i *think* some schools mention lor policy on their secondaries? confirmation?

I made a post entitled To LizzyM and the general consensus both everyone here and she told me, is that they have to teach you in a course.

I don't think your research prof will count as a science lor, because he didn't teach you in a course. Again, you should probably call the schools and ask, which is what I'm going to do for my predicament, but I'm just letting you know what the general feeling here is.

actually LizzyM clearly states that she would be okay with a research letter in place of a science one. it raises eyebrows when you don't have one if you did research

Thanks for the input. I forgot to mention my school has a committee that will be writing a letter as well, which, from what I understand, sometimes obviates adherence to specific requirements of schools. Does yours have one?

I am from Canada, I don't believe any schools here have a premed committee like the US does

Hey, this is my first post

Do you guys know if graduate professors will work. I have a very strong science letter from undergrad because I took 2 of his courses and did 3 years of research. However, the second one will be pretty bad if I ask for it from an undergrad prof. I'm a Masters student now and was thinking about using my Epidemiology professor to satisfy the requirement. What you guys think? Thanks

Two of the schools I plan to apply to require a letter from a peer. They suggest roommate or longtime friend. Make sure you know EXACTLY what the requirements are!

I have also heard that one of the schools requires a letter from a BASIC SCIENCE professor. It is the only school on my list that says basic, but I have yet to call the school and find out if that has to be the literal MCAT/pre-req basics or if it can be genetics or some other upper level bio.

As for jdawts question, how well do you know your Epi prof? Does s/he remember you? I think the relationship and strength of the letter trumps undergrad/grad. You could just consider the grad letter an added bonus, as most applicants will only have undergrad letters...
