Hi everyone,

I'm hoping to do an internship this summer, and I need a letter of recommendation from someone who knows my academic and research ability. I just today started doing research outside of class with a professor I met the first time when I asked to do research with him this past Tuesday. The LOR is due on February 15th. Should I ask the professor I'm doing research with to write me an LOR, or should I ask one of my current lab professors, who know me slightly better (but not a whole lot)? Or should I try to find another internship that I don't need the LORs as soon?

Thank you very much for your time, and I look forward to your response!

I can't imagine how someone who's only worked with you for one day could write you a strong letter of recommendation. Do you have any past professors who know you well who you could ask? It sounds like you don't have a lot of research experience, which might be an issue if that's something that's expected in this internship.

February 15th is also a pretty short turn-around period to ask someone for a letter... I would maybe start looking for other opportunities! I think it's generally best to ask for letters AT LEAST a month in advance. Preferably longer since profs/PIs are busy.

OP, sorry you're in such a position but as @thatwouldbeanarchy says, at least a month in advance for LORs (really should be 2-3 months, especially if you need multiple ones). And usually a strong letter comes from someone you've known for at least 3 months and who knows your motivations, goals, etc. I suggest you sit down with your previous lab instructors/mentors and explain your goal. Also include a CV/resume and a summary of skills/classes taken/etc gained since they taught you last.
