Hi guys,

I am a part of a volunteer organization that goes monthly down to Mexico to provide healthcare to rural areas of the country. I have a leadership position with this organization, and it has immensely impacted the way I view medicine. Most of my personal statement revolves around experiences with this organization.

During the time I have been with this organization, I have grown close to the volunteer coordinator as well as a physician I often work with. The physician has since allowed me to shadow her in the states, and she has become a sort of mentor figure to me.

Would it be beneficial to obtain LORs from these two individuals? The volunteer coordinator, the physician, both, or neither?

Thanks!

Both would be good. I cannot speak for your specific mentors and their writing abilities, but traditionally physicians tend to write better letters of recommendation because they know what is expected in them; non-physician and non-academia letter writers tend to write weaker letters. I base this observation on the 60+ undergrad LORs I have read as an interviewer for my medical school.
