So I am in a graduate program this year, which required a few LORs for admissions, including my former PI, professors, etc. I know for a fact that my PI wrote me a very strong letter (knew him very well, performed well in his class/research). A few months ago I tried reaching out to him again to update his letter, via email and cell, but no responses from him. I would visit his lab, but due to distance and work/class schedule, it is difficult to just 'show up' and say hi.

The question is: should I sacrifice this strong letter from my PI, or go ahead and submit it, when it may very well be intended as a general letter of my performance (not towards medical schools)? What do you guys think? Of course I will try to make the trek personally, it is just unlikely in the next few weeks.

Make the trek. Get yourself the strong letter from the PI. You put in the work for it already, you should get the full benefits.
