Yo guys, just wondering if anyone has been in this situation. I went/ am going to USC for undergrad and was hoping that would help me out for interviewing at their med school, my stats are within their lines (3.74, 34 MCAT) and I did 1 year of research with a professor of their med school. I didn't think my LOR's would be too strong but my PI wrote me a 4 pg letter of rec and told me it was good. I also just found out that he doesn't get along with USC's dean of admission lol- will this affect me?

Also, anyone know if private schools award extra points to people who went to their undergrad? (especially schools like USC that have a lot of school pride- thanks!)

I'm in an almost identical situation at another CA school. I've pretty much been silently rejected... hope it works out better for you than it did for me!

Unfortunately, it may. Think of college professors as high school girls. Sometimes they are able to think rationality and not be passive aggressive and drama-causing. Others, oh dear. In your spot, I hope for the best but fear the worst.

Usually the school either blatantly states a preference or makes statistics available which will answer this question.

Best of luck!

You should have had your pi write you a bad letter, then they would accept you just to spite him!

Fixed for you bro. Adverb rather than noun.

You'll be fine. I am sure they will set aside their differences. Probably from a chess match or something.

I think out of there class, USC had 80 undergrads from USC and then like 60 from UCLA, So I think it is a preference, but I'm not sure by how much.

And damn, USC is one of my top picks for med school!

The letter could sink you depending on how bad the relationship is. At my institution, many professors have open rapport with people in the med school and if they see you doing something stupid in undergrad, it can get passed on. This is an example of a good relationship, but I'm sure it works both ways. If the med school doesn't have a good relationship with the professor, they may use it against.

Also, most Florida med schools (besides being heavily in state biased) lean towards their own graduates. I speak mainly for the large public institutions (USF, UF and FSU) but I believe it does hold true for UMiami too.
