By the time I move out east to the sticks next year to attend Post-Bacc, I'll have worked as a tech in the ED for over a year and a half. I've settled down and lost some of the pre-med twitteriness. I'm respectful to a fault, but not shy about approaching people. I could probably get some decent letters, from residents and from staff who know me and have worked with me for a while. And I still have the luxury of time, so I can wait for good moments to arise.
But is there any point? I'll be in the med school application cycle for 2007. I still need to do all my pre-reqs. Would a letter from early 2005 be of any use?
The volunteering I do (if any) and the people I shadow (if any) while I'm in the Post-Bacc pressure cooker will be the ones I'd traditionally use. But the letterhead from where I work now means something in the EM world.
"Steve Staffdoc, MD" saying "Feb is a good guy, he works hard in our urban Level One Trauma Center, he gets it -- and with the right training, he'd do well as one of us" would be awesome... but by the time I'm applying, that's a letter from 2 years ago.
My other choice might be "Walt Collegetown, MD" saying "Feb is almost done with postbac, he works hard -- and he was calm and collected during that big barn dance accident last fall. You can really tell he has a feel for this."
Either have pros and cons. I just can't tell how it all boils down. Any thoughts? As an EM staff doc (or someone who will be one before too many more years), what would you think of being asked to write a letter for a med school app that's over a year from being submitted?
