I'm graduating at the end of this year, but I won't be applying to medical school until next June. I want to get my LORs in order before I graduate, so that my writers will still remember me, but I'm unsure how to accomplish this. My school's premed office is completely useless in this regard. Can anyone who's been in this situation shed light on how they handled it?

Get the letters and have them upload to www.interfolio.com.

I was in a similar situation. It might be a good idea to ask them for letters now, and submit them to a letter service like Interfolio (which you can then forward to the AMCAS letter service when you apply). It's also probably worthwhile to make an attempt to remain in contact with your professors by sending them updates periodically, or swinging by their office/lab to say "hi." If you'll be doing research with any of them, it might be a good idea to avoid asking them until a later date (they'll have more time to get to know you and hopefully write a stronger letter).

Keep in mind that some schools are really picky about including the following things (so make sure the professors are well aware when you ask them): the letter has to be dated (some schools require that the letter is dated with the year that you apply), the letter has to be on official letterhead, and the letter has to be signed.

Good luck!

Talk to any professors you are interested in asking for letters now. Many have there own systems for this, often times writing a letter now and keeping it on file. Others will take notes on you, or have you write something about yourself, and keep that so that they can refer back to it if you decide to ask them later (a nice option if you are not sure if you will need the letter of school/work/something else.

In any case, stay in touch with anyone you are thinking of asking for letters. It not only ensures you can get in contact with them when necessary, it also means that they will remember you better if they have to change or update what they wrote.
