I'm applying for the first time this upcoming year (09 cycle) and I was wondering when is a good time to start asking for letters of rec. Other than a dentist and a science prof, who else would I need one from. Also, in total, what is an appropriate number of letters I should have.

You should probably tell them now to give them a heads up.

In general, I would recommend at least:

1 LOR from dentist
1 LOR from science professor
1 LOR from non-science professor.

I agree here. Check with the schools your applying to an make sure you get what they want so you don't waste time. It would suck to apply, pay fees, and not have one they want and thus be denied.

Some other schools want 3 letters from science teachers only! So be carefull when you select your schools.
