Are personal LORs from professors better than a committee letter from the pre-health department? Also, how many letters do you recommend from dentists?

I did the committee and personal LOR's. I don't know what is standard but I did 2 science profs, 1 service supervisor, 1 local dentist I shadowed, and the committee ltr.

Many schools state on their web sites that they prefer the committee, but individual letters may suffice. In order to receive a committee letter through my university, students had to submit individual letters from professors to the committee. The committee wrote a consolidated “committee letter,” but then attached all the individual letters to the back of it. Check with your school and how they go about this process.

One from a dentist is enough. Most schools will flat out tell you what they want for a minimum (i.e. 2 from science proffs, 1 dentist, 1 non-specific). However, they also advise to keep the total number down because they want to read through 10 LORs per applicant.

I did the committee and personal LOR's.

Be careful, because this doesn’t work with AADSAS anymore. AADSAS will either do 4 total letters, or a committee letter, with one additional letter.

I agree and will add that some schools are sticklers on the exact number of LORs the will accept. I was informed to not send more than what is listed on the website.

My advice to the TS. If you have a Pre-Health committee that writes the composite letter. Get to know them just as you would if you were going to get a LOR from a professor. In either case you want the best possible letter(s) and the only way to avoid the same old pre-written letter is to let them know who you are and what your all about.

Holla! Another question, is it better to have two recs from science profs or could it be from an econ professor too?

Depends on the school. You need to check the requirements of each one because some will tell you to have at least 2 science professors write you letters.

it's specifically stated by the schools. I found that many schools preferred biology professors overall. I know schools like columbia and tufts could care less about ECON, but would probably consider them anyway.
