Snap out of it! You're at the end of the (premedical) marathon, dont give up now!

Watch stupid medical shows, read books related to medicine, listen to podcasts like chubbyemu on YouTube when I walk my dog. If I don’t get a regular dose of clinical correlations I start to lose the motivation to work hard.

Other than that, build self discipline and set up rewards you know you’ll look forward to at the end of a day/week/block of studying.

Ugh I know!! I don't want to give up and I'm not going to, but one part of my brain is trying to sabotage me!! The problem is truly that I know I need to snap out of it but I haven't been able to figure out how

Just get out of the house (if you can). Go volunteer at a food pantry, homeless shelter, blood drive, animal shelter, do something meaningful and good. You don't have to do something clinical to make an impact.

This is good advice, thanks!

I can't unfortunately. I live with my parents and my dad is high risk for COVID so I don't feel safe potentially exposing him just to go out and volunteer

I think you answered your own question in your post. You have the passion and intrigue in medicine, but you're merely experiencing a "pothole in the road". We all experience those. Think about athletes that dream of making it in the big leagues, most if not all have experienced struggle pertaining to lost motivation in their path. There is a light at the end of this tumultuous cave, so don't forget that. Only YOU can decide whether you want to follow it or not.

Wishing you well on your hard road to the castle.

That's definitely the move. Have you checked out virtual volunteering positions? There's a couple on VolunteerMatch. It always just makes me feel better if I have somewhere to be or do. In a way have a makeshift schedule for yourself, i.e. you're scheduled to write your secondaries from 10am-12pm, having lunch then doing something else in the afternoon.

Thank you, this means a lot! You're so right. I definitely want to follow it, it just feels weird, like I've forgotten all these meaningful anecdotes that would be helpful in writing my secondaries with enthusiasm. I appreciate your comment, I'll work on finding whatever it is to get me back to my motivated place!

Thank you! This is great, I'll look into it!!

A lack of motivation creeps to all of us occasionally. I don't mean to drive up your neuroticism, but for me, whenever I feel lazy or unmotivated, I ask myself:
1. How would I feel knowing there are other people grinding and working towards the goal?
2. Can I try 2 minutes of doing this task?

Usually, after 2 minutes, I break the mental resistance and am able to make more progress. If not, then hey, I still did 2 minutes of the task right? I know its nothing much, but its tiny steps and better than watching 2 minutes of non-educational YouTube videos 🙂
