I'm sure you've all seen these adds for prescription fish oil... is anyone seeing it prescribed? It seems to me like extra work and more money to get the same thing you can buy in 200-count bottles at Costco. Am I missing something? Is there an advantage to Lovaza over a good fish oil supplement, other than some extra bucks for GSK?

We actually have had a good amount of it prescribed for a while. A lot of insurances surprisingly cover it.
I think it is somewhat better, as it's purified, and there is regulation to its content, so the patient doesn't have to add up how much DHA they're getting and so on. Also some OTC fish oils have been found to be contaminated. But if one's insurance doesn't cover it, might as well just get OTC fish oil.

One of the only options for triglycerides and HDLs that doesn't have a contraindication for people with liver issues (only a precaution). I'd say it's worth it.

Do you still have fishy burps with it like the otc stuff?

One time someone tried to unit dose the Lovaza....AND since they are quite large, it didn't work out so well. The pharmacy smelled like a fish house for 2 days.

Just go with Omega 3-6-9 from a reputable company. The USP actually certifies some manufacturers and ensures quality.

I agree, go with the Costco High concentrate, EC Fish Oil: http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11248464. Kirkland gets most of their OTC products USP certified as well. You can get equivalent amounts of EPA/DHA with the Costco product, you just have to take 5 capsules instead of 4.

I give my dog Kirkland Fish Oil capsules 🙂

lol charf I was asking this same question Monday.

And you seem to have a lot of posts on father's day, whats up with that!?

Ugh, that smell is the worst. The prepack machine heats up to melt the plastic together, but if you're a bit out of alignment... you've got melted stinky fish oil.

As for retail, there's plenty of things that are just as good OTC, but if insurance covers it, why pay OTC price? Omeprazole, multivitamins, prenatals, ibuprofen, etc are pretty good examples.

You'd have to take 6 qd to get the same as Lovaza 4g/qd so that would last bottle would last a month so if your co-pay is less than 20 it's cheaper to go with Lovaza

Lovaza 4 capsules = 3600mg of DHA/EPA
Kirkland 5 capsules = 3420mg of DHA/EPA, last 36 days at 5/day

5 is close enough!😉

I have never seen Lovaza with a copay near $20, usually not covered or over $50/month, but that is just my experience.

Yeah, a 50$ copay is pretty beastily. In my area, I see routinely see co-pays at 20 or less so that is where I was coming from. THe Kirkland is enteric coated so that may be nice!

You will smell like a deep sea fisherman after the first day...😉

Yarrrghhh

Does Lovaza cause one to carry a fish odor? That is always my concern with fish oils...I switched to Flaxseed.

I take 1 kirkland fish oil and 1 flaxseed oil. I haven't checked by cholesterol since I started and it's been ~1yr. But I was above goal before I started, so we'll see where I am come health fair season.

I get my cholesterol level whenever I give blood, so you may want to think about giving blood instead of waiting for a health fair. 👍

Apparently if you freeze the fish oil you won't have fish burps . Don't know if it affects the way it works
