Do letters stating your desire to go to a specific program sway how they might rank you?

What about number two? I feel I have a MUCH better shot at number 2, however they are not number one.

This match process sucks, in that we have no idea what the programs are thinking.

Yes, you can email your number one. Will it change their rank for you? Probably no more than the love letters a program sends you changes your rank for them.

You can email your number 2 and tell them what you loved about them and how well you will fit into their program without saying "you're my number one."

The match process works. Its just like applying for any other job the only difference is all the rejections and the final job offer comes in the 10 seconds it takes to open a single envelope.

Rank the programs in the order in which they interest you. If your number 1 program ranks you highly, you will match there. It will not likely affect their ranking of you if you send a love letter at this late date. It will not affect your ranking if you put your number 2 program second.

Do not rank programs in the order in which you think you have a better shot.
