Will this score enable me to pass all cut offs for any residency program. I am not exactly sure what i want to go into, but i had intended on putting up a score that would allow me to confidently apply to any program in the country. I was somewhat upset when i found out i had recieved a 242/98 , particularly because i had scored a 247 1 week prior on the NBME 2, and was hoping to maybe break 250.
Assuming the rest of my application is strong ( good clinical grades, , maybe some research if i have time), will this score get my application considered by top residency programs ( eg Derm at Hopkins, Radiology NYU, ect...) ??? 😕

I think you're in great shape for whatever field you choose to go into. I have a feeling Derm at Hopkins will weigh who you know, if you rotated through, your AOA status, and where you're from more than your Step I score, no matter how good it is.

Good luck!

after youve had enough of throwing tantrums and lying on the floor, pick yourself up and seriously think about what you want to do in life.Im sick of people like you who do not have an idea of what they want to do late in life and cry that they cant make it.If you dont know what you are aiming for in life you will get a very big surprise down the road.Sheeesh, what research are you going to do that will cover Rad and Derm?Stop looking at whats currently 'hot'and start thinking :meanie:
ps-med is not one of those glossy mags that tells you what is hot so get a life

I'm surprised to see such a silly reply to someone whose career path has been mapped out since high school. Get a life, Troll (to cabrito)

Cabrito is only saying what many of us feel, when we have to read these mushy post about how bad life will be with a 240+ step score...oh ..the horror..the horror. As for the OP, you did great, thats a great score and you'll definately match in your choice. But you already knew that before your post. GL 😀

Someone needs some anger management. 😀

You should be able to get any speciallllity with that score. If you can not, there is a good reason. I trust the system.

Sorry to be the one to break this to you, but you are soooo screwed. Don't you know that all the top programs in specialties that lead to the highest income/hours worked ratios cut off at 245 for Step 1?!?

So close, and yet so far. Oh well, it was a good run while it lasted, old chap.

I would question being able to secure a spot in Derm with no problem. It appears that everyone has atleast a 240 or greater board score according to the EZboard derm forum and many other things (i.e found the cure for skin cancer) going for them. That kind of scares me since I'm considering Derm in my differential of things I want to be when I grow up and I have around the same board scores as OP but no other superhuman traits.

Man I wish I could post stuff like this....I have a feeling when I get my board scores back, it will be...."I got a 182 on boards...will this get me a residency anywhere in the US?"

Considering there are people here who got below 200 and even failed, the OP comes off as a little tool-ish.

Let's just say if you don't get into a competitive res program, it won't be because of your step one score.

My question is, to what degree do grades matter w/a good step I score? And how does step II play into all of this? I did fine on the exam (unofficially as per Dean's office) but I blow syphilitic monkeys with my grades. Am I doomed to suffer from chancres and to die insane and alone, with nothing but my prostitute's pupils to keep me company, or can step I be the shot of penicillin G I have been longing for? 😕

yeah. these kinds of posts are pointless.

your step 1 is done. there's nothing you can about it anymore.

just do your best and hope for the best. that's all you can do now. even if you don't get rads or derm at the top rez, you can try the next best place and be happy knowing that you'll still bank $350000 per year and get the mansion and bentleys you've always wanted.

im a first year and want to go to ped neuro. will have to place for peds, then place again for ped neuro? or will i place for ped. neuro as in the residency includes both? so whats a good score for a semi competitive residency 220? also i saw people not like 220/93 what the 93 mean? and whats agood score for ped neuro at a place like the univ of washington?

I hate to break the news to you guys, but after you cross 240 it really doesn't matter. Some resident directors say a 99 on a two digit score is what truly matters.

Sure, resident directors will be impressed with a 267, but after a certain score (I've personally heard 240 is the 3 digit score and 99 is the 2 digit score cutoff from resident directors with competitive residencies) you get the maximum 10/10 on paper for academic achievement via Step 1.

Contrary to posters on SDN, there isn't a 11/10 for scores above 270 when they grade your application. 😉

p53s post sounds like its coming from someone who got a 241ish score on step 1.

Not true. I'd love to hear which "residency director" told you that. Stop making stuff up.

Low 240's... damn, probably means you are doomed to a life of 300,000+ salaries, women desiring you, and picking your profession. Doesn't sound too bad right.

I have a paypal (with credit card) account, and I can scan you my score. Since, I'm a practical man that would take money over pride. If anyone from the 2005 Step 1 exam (besides Saco), think they beat me on Step 1 you can send me a PM, and we can exchange scans of our score report to see who scored higher. The person with the higher score will win the money. We can even send our Step 1 scores and money to DW since he is an honest SDN moderator, and he will declare who indeed had a higher Step 1 score.

You need a life, tool.

After 240, I don't think there is a big difference in scores. I scored > 250 and failed to get interviews at Harvard and Hopkins, UW.

Most PDs use Step I as a cutoff, then offer interviews based on an entire application including research, publications, WHO YOU KNOW, and who makes a phone call on your behalf.

240 is a great score and will help get interviews at most places. Don't count on interviews at the big name programs in competitive specialties unless you have something else going for you.

I got a 236 on boards, but my class rank is in the lower 10-30% of my class (and the school is an average state school).

So, with this mix, which specialties are out of the question?

This is, hands down, the saddest post I've ever come across.

I blew it. Am I trully not allowed to play? I would love to take your money and buy that new Canon L lens. MSTP salary just doesn't cut it any more.
