Hi, I'm not sure weather to post this in What are my Chances? or here but here goes:

I'm a freshman and I just got a B- in Calculus I (or the first Calculus course in College) and I was wondering whether I should retake it. I dont know my other grades for this quarter but I have to decide soon because if I take the next step, which would be Math 3B in my school, I'm not allowed to retake Math 3A. I've been reading on some similar questions and some say that showing a positive trend by getting A's in the next Math Courses I take would look better than retaking a class. But im wondering if that B- will make my GPA suffer because a B- counts as a 2.7 in my GPA

Thanks and hopefully this post isnt a dumb question that's asked a lot

most universities won't let you retake a class for credit that you have already passed. i know mine won't. so look into that before you think too much about it. i would just move on to the next class unless you feel severely unprepared. you can ask your professor for his/her recommendation as well. i would recommend tutoring if you have more trouble next semester. good luck!

well its not for credit. both grades show on the transcript but the 2nd time around if my grade is higher, the higher grade counts towards my GPA.

Far as AMCAS is concerned.. the average of the two classes = the grade
Osteopathic schoolswill take the higher grade son.

oh okay. so for the AMCAS, would it be wiser to retake the class or just forget about it and aim for A's in my next classes

It doesn't matter how your school handles the grade. AMCAS will put it back into your GPA calculations. There is no reason to repeat the B-. Just get an A in Calc II if it's required in your major, or move on to getting an A in any other math or science class to balance the effect of the B- on your BCPM GPA.

A B- is not worth retaking. Even getting an A the second time around offers no significant benefit to your GPA. Just work on doing well in your other classes from here on out.

My only B this semester was Calc I. Im a tad bit disappointed, but I went from failing the class to a B.. so Im happy I was able to turn it around. I had to put in about 20 hrs/week of tutoring on top of my own studying to bring up my grade. Had I realized I needed THAT much help at the beginning of the semester, I would have gotten help right away. So in a way I've learned my lesson. Next class I have that I struggle in that much I will not "wait and see" if it gets better, I'll get help immediately.
