So I'm currently a junior at UC Davis in California, majoring in Psychobiology, after transferring from a CC. I'm 23 years old now, and spent the first few years in a CC without direction, basically dicking around getting B's and C's (never less than that though). Eventually, I shaped up, transferred CC's and I've steadily improved as I've gotten older and more mature, with a set goal of getting into health care. It took me awhile to figure that out, but now that I have that goal in mind I've got it focused with laser precision with the motivation to back it up.

So here it is, as of today, according to AMCAS:
cGPA: 3.37
sGPA: 3.23

Broken down
Freshman (2 years at first CC):
cGPA: 2.86
sGPA: 2.58

This included some math and semester 1 of gen chem

Sophomore (2 years at second CC):
cGPA: 3.62
sGPA: 3.43

This included a quarter of calc, 2 quarters of gen chem, a year of bio, a year of ochem, and a year of physics, so most of the pre-reqs

Junior (2 quarters at Davis, I can say with confidence at this point I will get a 4.0 for this 2nd quarter):
cGPA: 4.0
sGPA: 4.0

This included genetics and physio, in terms of hard science, so far.

I haven't taken the MCATs yet (scheduled for this September) but I know I need to do above average on them to make up for my below average GPA. The positive is that there's a strong upward slope for my GPA, and I'm working my butt off to maintain A's in Davis. I'm doing all I can to raise my GPA until graduation, but is it too little too late?

My EC's aren't that impressive either, basically non-existant while in CC. The summer before I transferred to Davis I shadowed an anesthesiologist for 8 hours. I'm currently involved in a clinical internship at the UCD Medical Center ICU, which will get me to 40 hours by the end of this quarter, and I plan to continue with that each quarter until I graduate in 2015. I also just got accepted in a lab as an RA, I'll start that in a few weeks with the option for undergrad research in the future.

All I want to know is if I have a decent chance at getting into a US school, and what I could to do make myself a more competitive applicant. I'm tentatively hopeful for DO, but I think I'd prefer MD if given the chance (I know it's a long shot). Thoughts, suggestions?

Wouldn't bother sending in an MD application. You could get into an osteopathic program with a 25 or higher, but if you're looking at the better programs you'll need to beef up EC and get a 28+.

That's what I figured. I was hoping to bring my GPA up before I graduate to around a ~3.35 sGPA and ~3.5 cGPA, and round that off with a strong, strong MCAT score (aiming for mid 30's). We'll see how that goes though.

If you get a strong MCAT score and wait to apply to med schools until after graduation with consistent high grades for the next 1.3 years and much improved ECs, especially considering your nontraditional age, I don't think an MD acceptance is impossible. Maybe not in California, but who knows, if you spread your net wide.

100% concur with my learned colleague. Invest in MSAR and apply strategically.

Thanks for the replies. I'm that much more motivated to do what it takes now.

34+ MCAT with these GPAs should get you in somewhere as long as you have decent ECs...
