Hey guys I talked to my prehealth advisor today. She said the main thing that is holding me back is my grades. My overall gpa is about a 3.5-3.6 by the time i apply to med school. However, my science gpa is really low like 3.0 status. The reason my science gpa is so low is because I got 3 Cs in two back to back semesters. This came from problems that were happening with my family so I was made a choice to concentrate on that rather than my grades those semesters. Could anyone tell me how much this will hurt me? what things can help me make up for it? These things happened in the beginning of my college career so end of freshman yr/beginning of sophmore yr. Never got a C after that.

You want to bump that 3.0 science GPA up some. Doing well in additional upper level science and math courses will do that. Have you continued to take BCMP courses since then?

At least the "C's" were early in your academic career. They will have a slightly lower impact because you've had an upward trend. You still want to do what you can to raise that above a 3.0.

i got several c's in science courses and i am at upitt med- a 3.0 bcpm will not preclude you from getting into med school (and a top 15 med school at that).
go steelers.

3 C's and 6 B-'s here in science classes with a 3.22 sGPA. Got 8 interviews and 1 acceptance so far.

According to my interviewers, I made up for it through my EC's and essays. All the interviews I got were at institutions that required a thorough secondary application (Duke, for instance, had 5 essays with no word limit). I spent almost 2 months working on those essays and was offered an interview less than 14 days after I was complete. Sure, you have to be aware that the low sGPA is a concern, but the only thing you can do now is focus on the other parts of the application to showcase the holistic you.

Also, make sure your LOR's are solid. One of my recommenders showed me her letter and it was something along the lines of "in my 40 years of teaching he's the most brilliant I have ever met." I think that definitely helped. Don't ask for letters from people who don't know you. And spend as much time as humanly possible working with them so they get to know you.

Good luck!!!!!!

Ok that makes me feel better. Im def aware of the circumstances but Im just glad it doesnt keep me completely out of the running. Also, do Med school look at the AMCAS re-calculated gpa? Or will they be focusing on the GPA that I see generally on my transcript?
