What are people's thoughts about the Psych Residency at Loyola?

So 95 people have viewed this thread but no one has any comments?!? I am interviewing here and would love to know how others that are planning to interview here are feeling.
I am very excited 😎

I'm currently a PGY3 at Loyola and from my perspective the residency has been great. The call isn't too bad even though we cover 2 hospitals (Loyola and Hines VA). We cover a 28 bed inpt unit at Hines and both EDs as well as floor consults. We are currently on a night float system where you do 1 month in your first year and two months in your second year (Sunday night through Thrusday night from 8pm-8am). After that you are on call maybe once or twice a month over the weekend. We currently have rotations at Loyola University, Hines VA, Madden state mental health system, Hartgrove, and Elgin state mental health system. First and second year your rotations are at these various hospitals and a half day for didactics usually on Thrusdays. Third year is all outpt med management, psychotherpy, and didactics. Fourth year is outpt med management and therapy and various electives as well as research. During these rotations you also have the opportunity to teach medical students while they are on their psych rotation in third year.
The attendings are excellent teachers especially at Hines where there are over 30 attendings and multiple programs available for the vets including Trauma Services for vets with PTSD and many substance abuse programs including a methadone clinic. We also have the opportunity to participate in ECT at Hines and on rotations at Madden. At Loyola you have the opportunity to participate in clinical reseach and research with TMS was just started a few months ago.

If you have any other questions, just send me a message.

😍

I am an MS4 at Loyola applying for Psychiatry. So I'll be honest and admit I am biased because I have had a good experience. Last year I spent six weeks at Madden Mental Health Center (next to Loyola and the VA), which is a large state-funded Psychiatric Hospital and probably forty or fifty percent of the patients I interviewed/cared for there had Schizophrenic features (to say nothing of Bipolar I and II, MDD, and drug addiction). This was an amazing learning experience not only because of the acuity but also the Loyola Attending and Resident I worked for were great.

I have done some outpatient work at Loyola and the Hines VA Hospital too (the largest Veterans Hospital in the Midwest, literally next door to Loyola). I saw a mix of patients (everything from Veterans with PTSD, substance abuse, and depression, to children with PDD and Autism at Loyola).

I am a fan of Loyola Psychiatry because I am better able to learn in a positive environment. The Residents and Attendings here are supportive people who like to teach. It is ok to take a step back and laugh at things every once in a while! Also, there is a hefty variety of patient populations (each with its own challenges)--and, no doubt about it, you are given the opportunity and independence to learn from each of them.

Hope this helps. Please email me if you would like to know more: [email protected]

Thanks for the input! I'm glad to hear some great things about this program. I really like the idea of getting to work at the VA with veterans, as well as working in a methadone clinic.
I'm excited for my interview in January upon which I can see all that the program has to offer myself 😉
