Hey everyone, I'm interested in the dual MD/MA program in Bioethics at Loyola Stritch. If anyone has experience with it, would you mind sharing what you thought or PMing me so I could ask a couple questions? Thanks!

I didn't do it, but I would guess 10-15% of my class did. It is basically like an extracurricular program, very doable if you have the interest, but there are some extra deadlines for the bioethics work, along with a normal busy class load for the standard courses. Loyola is a good school, and I would think of it as a perk if you have the interest, and you don't have to decide until you get in. I graduated a while back, so as a disclaimer, the program may have changed.

Thanks for your reply. Do you know anything about the finances of it? The website makes it sound like there are a lot of scholarships available for med students, so I'm wondering how much the cost is typically brought down. It looks like a great program and I'm excited to hear it's as doable as the site makes it seem.

I think it's something like an extra $20-30k.

It sounds like it might have changed... Disregard my previous post.

Yeah, I was talking about the honors program.

Just to clarify...there's an actual MA program in bioethics that you can enroll in. That costs money.

There's also a (free) honors program that you can apply for (and pretty much everyone who wants to get in will get accepted) that involves some extracurricular things throughout your time at Loyola. When it's all said and done, you graduate with "Honors in Bioethics."

They are two different programs, but there is some overlap (i.e. to complete the MA, you will do all of the things in the honors program plus some other stuff).

Thanks for letting me know that! The extra $20-30,000 was definitely putting a damper on my excitement. Good to know if everything goes well and I end up at Loyola that I can get experience in bioethics without having to rack up even more debt.

I say go for the MD,MA so you can be Dr. Ecstasy.

The program awards almost complete scholarships to two people each year for the MA. So it's possible to get the MA without going that much further in debt (I don't know how big the scholarships is--I just know it covers most of of the cost).

You can call the school if you'd like more specifics on the scholarships--I'm sure they'd be happy to tell you more.

what would you actually use a MA in bioethics for? I mean really wth is its use?
