Hello everyone! I didn't see a thread for this so I thought I'd start one. Is anyone else applying for Loyola's MSMP for next year? I just submitted my application last week. Has anyone gotten into the program yet?

Yes, I have applied to both the MAMS and MSMP. My last recommender just sent in their letters yesterday, so my applications are officially complete.

Looking at previous threads, it looks like it takes about a month after your application is complete to hear back.

I just submitted my application today! I hope all of the craziness going on these days doesn't delay anything too much.

Hey guys! So I submitted my application for both MSMP and MAMS on March 3rd and had all transcripts and other materials in by March 11th.

I just heard back from both programs and I got into both!

I am having trouble figuring out which one to choose and was wondering if anyone had insight to help me make a decision 🙂

Congratulations! How did they inform you? By email or phone call? Do you know how often the committees meet?

So I got a call yesterday and an email today. I was told that the committee calls applicants every 1st and last Thursday of each month. Hence, I got a call yesterday 🙂

So the MSMP program I know for sure makes calls every first and last Thursday’s of the month. I actually never received a call from MAMS, but got an acceptance email from both programs today. So I assume they follow similar admission review patterns.

Yea I think MAMS is the OG program. And it’s very well respected. I believe MAMS also offers a Committee letter to all its students. However the MSMP program is at Stritch School of Medicine and you are doing real medical school courses... so I’m having a lot of trouble trying to pick between the two

Did you guys submit the same statements of purpose for both MAMS and MSMP?

Did you guys submit the same statements of purpose for both MAMS and MSMP?

Yes, I did. They were basically my personal statement for medical school but an extra paragraph at the end explaining why I believe either MAMS or MSMP would be beneficial for me to get into medical school etc.

Hi everyone, I'm in the MSMP program currently. I can't recommend it enough. It is an awesome program. I decided between this and MAMS and am so glad that I chose MSMP. If they accept you into MSMP they really know you will get into medical school. Feel free to ask me any questions or to PM me!

Turning in my application this week! Any folks who got accepted have any tips?

Turning in my application this week! Any folks who got accepted have any tips?

I got accepted about 3 weeks ago. I essentially turned the exact same personal statement from my previous AMCAS cycle, and the same letters of rec. I did add an extra paragraph at the end of my personal statement that explained why the MSMP program would help me become a better applicant and prepare me for medical school tho!

You can DM me if you have any specific questions 🙂

Hey all - I see on the website it says the Guaranteed Interview may occur during the program year under exceptional circumstances? Does anyone have more information on this? Does Stritch consider your Fall grades from the MSMP program when inviting applicants to interview?

I called and asked about this. The MSMP program will send a grades update and a letter of recommendation as well after the first semester for students in the program who are applying in the current cycle. But the interview you could receive would be completely independent from the "guaranteed interview" that you would receive after successful completion of the program.

What do you all think about taking the MCAT after the program? I was speaking with a GTown SMP alum who said that while the program ends in early June (I believe this year he said it ends June 8th), he as well as the other students didn't have any problems taking the MCAT that following July and applying on time.

I'm just a little torn because while I'm scheduled to take the MCAT this July 28th I'm taking an extra year post-SMP to apply) as I've heard the horror stories of studying for the MCAT while in the SMP, several SMP alumni and program directors (including the Loyola MSMP one that several of us have talked to over the phone) have also recommended that I take it after the SMP is finished as it prepares me well for the MCAT, despite giving up the opportunity to apply to medical schools as soon as the SMP grades come out.

This dilemma is also compounded by the fact that I'm not even sure if MCAT July test dates will still be held due to COVID, forcing me to take MCAT afterwards regardless. I was just wondering what you all were thinking about the timing of taking the MCAT in relation to the SMP program?

Im in the same boat, Dr. Piedras called me and told me to wait until after the SMP, but idk if I can wait man. I was scheduled to take the exam on June 5 but I decided to push it back because I was scared it would get canceled. So I'm scheduled for July 5th now. I'm gonna grind and kill it because I dont want to think about that damn test again anymore. So I guess it's situational. If you're scoring decently on practice exams and have a good grasp of the material, then by all means take it. But if there is a gap in your knowledge and you don't feel comfortable taking the exam then waiting is probably a better bet for you.

Dude, I have no idea what to do lmaooo. I just got accepted to the MSMP program. Im soooo torn. Which way are you leaning .?

Applied last week to both programs! Super excited. Anyone else concerned about if classes will be online or in-person this fall?

I'm not concerned but definitely curious to see what will be different if it does become online! I would assume that we'd still be able to perform similarly and that we'd still have the ability to communicate with program directors/faculty.

That being said, I'm coming off of a gap year and before this pandemic I haven't really experienced online classes, so my expectations may be wrong!

Hello Everyone!

I called the program coordinator this morning and wanted to share some info.

They should be making a decision sometime in early June whether or not classes will be held online or in person. Hopefully not, but on the chance of it happening- you wouldn't have to move from out of state (if you are) and continue doing your ECs at home.

The adcoms are having a meeting today and in two weeks to discuss applicants etc, so some of you may hear back soon

Also- I am planning on applying concurrently. If anyone else is, how are you putting this in your AMCAS? I was thinking of putting it as one of the 15 experiences? Let me know what you think

I'm not applying concurrently, but thanks for reaching out to them for more info and updating us!

On another note, has anyone started scouting out places/roommates in the case that the program will still be in person? I feel that I need to get on that pretty soon (again just in case).

Hopefully we'll hear back soon about whether classes will be in-person. Seems likely that there will at least be a portion that is.

Anyone else traveling from out-of-state to attend the program? I was looking on Zillow and other websites to checkout apartments near the area, particularly Forrest Park but I am hoping to travel to Chicago a bit earlier from the program start date to find a quiet place where I can focus on studying. Any luck on your part?

I am traveling out of state! Are you applying this cycle too? Can you message me?
Definitely!

I applied last cycle so I’m planning to apply after the program, so I can take advantage of the guaranteed interview and finish the program.

Yeah if they stick to the schedule we should be hearing something this week; also I'm out of state so in case y'all are looking for another person or something other lmk!

I was looking at Forest Park too as well as Oak Park but haven't really done much digging cuz I'm waiting on a definite yes/no from program directors

Hi guys! This program is my top choice. Would it be wise to send a letter of interest to Dr. Piedra? Especially since there was no secondary required for the program, I'd like to talk about why I like the program and think I'm a good fit. I have one drafted and ready to send. Congrats to all those accepted!

I think it couldn't hurt! How long have you been awaiting a response?

For those of you awaiting a response or have been accepted but not on the email list, I just got an email from the program coordinator that the tentative update is that the program will be taught in a hybrid format.

They said this plan, while already approved by the University, is contingent on Illinois moving to phase four of their reopening plan, which is on track to happen end of June/early July.

However, again this is a tentative answer; if we hear a more definite one I'll relay it here if someone hasn't done so already!

Hey Everyone! I just found out about this program yesterday and started my application today. Any advice on what to write in the personal statement?

I forget if MSMP's personal statement asks for something different than the conventional AMCAS personal statement, but

In the case that it's referring to the same generic AMCAS prompt, I just wrote about experiences that contributed to my decision to pursue med school in crhonological order (they all say to tell a story, and a direct timeline helps with that), even if those experiences weren't explicitly medical-related.

In the case that it's asking why an SMP is the right choice for me, I just blended parts of my futuer AMCAS PS with my statement of purpose, basically talking about how it aligns with goals but is more appropriate for my given stats and standpoint

Does anyone know what the acceptance rate is here? I know that there are only 30 spots, but how many people generally apply each year? Or is this information unknown?

It doesn’t seem like they let it be known unfortunately, I might be wrong though. Are you still waiting on a decision?

They sent an email today just for those who may be accepted but not on the email list about textbooks for the classes. So excited for things to start up!

There seems to be some more spots available from what I can tell also btw, hope you get in^^^

Looking forward to meeting our classmates!

Welcome aboard!

Yea there totally is, I think you can search it? "Loyola MSMP"

They included it in an email a while back for me

Hello, this is my first time posting on here! Congratulations to everyone who was accepted! I wish everyone nothing but success and an acceptance to your preferred choice of medical school in the future!!

I apologize in advance for the length of my post! I am graduating this December with my bachelors in Psychology and minor in Biology. I started my application for the MSMP program for next year 2021. I plan on submitting it in December after I have my final grades in. I am very worried about not getting in due to the small class size. I live in Michigan so going to Illinois would be very ideal for me because I help my family a lot. What advice can anyone give me to make my application stronger? My cumulative GPA is 3.5 (and will be higher hopefully after this last semester. I am taking 18 credits) and I am taking the MCAT September 27th. I am worried because my science GPA took a hit after taking genetics (cr.4) and microbiology (cr.5) with absolutely the worst professors!! I also plan on taking the GRE sometime in November to further strength my application. My end goal is making it to medical school!

Here are just a few things about me that I will mention in my application:
For my personal statement, I plan on talking about my journey to America from Iraq and tie into why I want to pursue a career in the medical field.
In 2015 I enlisted in the Michigan National Guard and in 2017 I contracted on scholarship with ROTC to commission this December as a 2nd Lieutenant branching in Medical Services.
I have my EMT certification and Im going to get back to working after I take the MCAT.
I also got my CNA but I never worked as a CNA.
I did research studying hydrocephalus shunts but the lab is currently on hold due to COVID19.
I have shadowing/volunteering hours and I am working on getting letter of recommendations.
In 2018, the military send me to Jordan to study abroad for 3 months.

Are there any specific science classes the program likes to see you have prior to attending the program if accepted? On their website, it says that calculus is preferred but I took AP Stats in high school and I got my math credits satisfied but I took a math placement exam at my university and I placed into Calculus. I just didnt take the class. Should I take it this fall semester? I also plan on retaking Microbiology and genetics at a community college this fall semester.

These are the science courses I took: Life Sciences (A) , Plants and Animals (B) , Cell Biology (A), Microbiology (D /: ), Histology (B), Cellular BioChem (A), Proteins&Proteomics [Graduate class] (B+), Genetics (F :/ ), Human Physiology and Anatomy+Lab (A), Human Physiology (C+)
I took 1 year of physics, organic chemistry and inorganic chemistry all with lab.

I have done so much research about this program and it is stressing me out because I don't know anyone who completed it to ask questions.

Any word of advice or help would be very much appreciated!!

Thank you to everyone in advance! 🙂

Honestly go all out on your MCAT and yea probably take calculus, it'd only help with future med school applications. I'm not really sure what they particularly look for but they seem very communicative so calling admissions probably wouldn't hurt.

But the interview you could receive would be completely independent from the "guaranteed interview" that you would receive after successful completion of the program.

Ahh gotcha, so technically to get that guaranteed interview, you'd have to apply in the next cycle

Hey ! Did you find out if it’ll be all online, all in person etc? I’m still waiting to hear back from them so I’m curious

Does anyone know if they're still accepting students? I sent my application in late July and have heard nothing since.

I emailed Margaret and she said decisions should be coming out mid-week this week since application closed August 13th!

Thank you!!

It's just that on their website they stated that accepted applicants would have to confirm their attendance by Aug 20th (tomorrow) and I still haven't heard anything. Wasn't sure if that meant they filled up the class and will just reject everyone else.

Yeah I was wondering about that as well but I am sure since they are still making decisions there are some seats left, hopefully we will know today!
